About Flower Mound, TX

You may be wondering why the city is named Flower Mound.  There is a large mound that sits 650 feet above sea level, and it stands 50 feet above the surrounding countryside.  Historians believe the city received its name in the late 1840s because of the unusual amount of wildflowers that grew on the mound.  The mound is now referred to as The Flower Mound and is governed by The Flower Mound Foundation to keep the original character of the site, and promote and encourage educational, scientific, and historical interests.

The Mound is part of the Texas Blackland prairies and is usually covered in big bluestem, little bluestem, and Indian Grasses.  During the blooming season, the slopes of the mound are magnificently covered in colorful wildflowers.  It also hosts a system of 33 miles of recreational hiking and biking paths and 9 miles of equestrian trails.
